History of the parquet
• The old art traditions brought to us through the interior designs of Hermitage and Versailles are still alive. Beautiful parquet flooring is not just a work of fine art, but also a family property.
• Roots of the parquet history reach in the remote past. Wonderful wooden floors have been made already in ancient Egypt, India and China. Palace building on a grand scale that started in St. Petersburg, Peterhof and Moscow commenced fast development of design ideas and parquet laying technologies. In the documents from this period of time can be found that the Russian masters mainly have used domestic wood species. In the parquet the natural colour tone of the wood has always had high importance. Depending on the light distribution on the transverse sections and the movement of the light source individual parts of the parquet “lighted up” as brighter areas or were fading.
• Until the 19 century all the process of the parquet production was done manually by masters – marquetry makers. Just in the beginning of 20 century number of production units started industrial mass production of simple parquet staves from different wood species. Laying of parquets from the art turned into a trade.
After a revolution in Russia there was no further development of parquet. Renascence of the parquet was marked by the renovation works commenced in Ostankino Palace and Museum located in Moscow. There also can be found the roots of the name: “palace” parquet.
• Nowadays the works done by the creative group PREMIER PARQUETconfirm that the designing of palace parquet is not a trade, but an art.
